Why do I need a sport physical?

Hi there! Jen here, your local Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. I’m so happy you are here.

I’ve been asked many times, why do I need a sport physical?

The simple answer- to make sure you are fit to play sports. The NOT so simple answer-not only to make sure you are fit to play but to rule out your risk for injuries; and more importantly cardiac issues. Not to mention, hernias, especially for males (post puberty). Weird I know!

So you may think the head to toe thing is over kill, but it’s our job and duty to you, to not miss anything. Within our control anyway. Of course , we as medical providers, can’t promise you will never be injured- but we can guide you on proper preventative care.

Sudden cardiac death is a real concern in athletes. This can happen if you have an undiagnosed cardiac condition or an extensive family history of cardiac conditions. Indicators may be activity intolerance such as feeling out of breath or dizzy with minimal exertion. You should discuss any symptoms or cardiac concerns with your provider. Even if it means you won’t be cleared until further work up.

Although these visits are usually quick, we can learn a whole lot about you by inspecting your body.

Pro tip: always answer the questionnaires truthfully. At the worst, you may need further work up to make sure you are safe to play. Once everything checks out, we love to clear you and get you back to playing sports.
